Energy Saving Strategies and On-Site Power Generation in a University Building from a Tropical Climate

This paper compares the potential for building energy saving of various passive and active strategies on-site power generation through a grid-connected solar photovoltaic system (SPVS). The case study is student welfare unit from university campus located in tropical climate (Aw) Guayaquil, Ecuador. proposed approach aims to identify most effective strategy retrofit this climate. For purpose, we modeled base line scenarios that were evaluated independently. All simulations done OpenStudio-EnergyPlus, while was carried out using Homer PRO software. Results indicated incorporation daylighting controls accounted highest savings around 20% 14% total consumption, cooling loads, respectively. Also, provided reduction about 35% 43% respectively, when combined with triple low-e coating glazing measures. On other hand, annual electric delivered by SPVS (output converter) 66,590 kWh, where 48,497 kWh supplied remaining electricity injected into grid.
